If your business handles oils, chemicals, fuels, or liquids of any kind, spill control is not optional. It is a critical part of your health, safety, and environmental responsibilities.
A common question we hear is:
The answer is not always one or the other. It depends on your environment, risk level, and how your operations function day to day.

The Short Answer
Every site is different. A professional site survey is the most effective way to determine where spill kits and spill stations should be located.

This includes:
IMS moves your business from reactive purchasing to proactive risk management.
This approach aligns directly with ISO 14001 principles of continual improvement and environmental protection.

In many workplaces, spill management opportunities appear every day but they are often missed on risk assessments or site visits. These opportunities can appear when:
A new site opens.
A warehouse expands.
An audit identifies compliance gaps.
Or a spill incident highlights weaknesses in existing procedures.
For distributors and safety professionals, these moments represent an opportunity to add real value to customers. The challenge is often time, resources and expertise.
That is exactly why Ecospill created the Inventory Managed Services (IMS)activation process, designed to make it simple for distributors to involve Ecospill’s spill specialists and help their customers improve their spill preparedness and compliance.
Ecospill supports our trusted distributors and organisations with practical solutions including managed wipe and absorbent stations, professional site surveys and spill response training.
Step 1 – Spot the Opportunity
Some common triggers include:
These situations often highlight areas where spill control measures could be improved and old and existing methods can be challenged.
Step 2 – Send One Email
Once an opportunity is identified, getting support from Ecospill is simple.
Just send the key site details to:
There is no need to check regional coverage or identify which Business Development Manager is responsible for the site.
The Ecospill team will take it from there.
Step 3 – Ecospill Conducts the Survey
Our specialists will carry out a professional spill site survey and provide practical recommendations tailored to the customer’s environment.
Following the survey, Ecospill prepares a ready-to-issue proposal that the distributor can present directly to the customer.
This ensures the solution is both technically appropriate and commercially clear.
Many customers also benefit from installing managed wipe and absorbent stations to ensure spill response materials are always visible and ready for use.
Absorbents & Wipers shouldn’t be hard to find when you need them most. Ecospill IMS Managed Stations keep spill response materials visible, accessible and fully replenished helping maintain cleaner, safer shopfloors.
Step 4 – Why This Approach Works
The IMS activation process benefits both distributors and their customers.

Any company with the potential for a spill should have trained staff in place and the correct products available to contain or absorb spilled liquids. The emergency plan should be simple and straightforward, flexible, and designed to achieve the necessary compliance with legislative requirements.
The spill plan should include prevention measures and clear guidance on how to contain, clean up, and dispose of spilled material. This will also include having the necessary spill management products positioned around the site(s), which will consist of, but not be limited to, spill kits and absorbent granules.
Workers tasked with cleaning a spill should also understand how to decontaminate affected surfaces. Using a spill response plan ensures that any spill is fully absorbed and contained, minimising danger, reducing the risk of heavy fines, and ensuring your company operates within legal requirements.
Please find below Ecospill’s 10 steps to perfect spill response.

Effective spill management is a critical part of health, safety, and environmental protection in any workplace. From minor leaks to major incidents, knowing how to manage a workplace spill correctly can prevent injuries, environmental damage, costly clean-ups, and regulatory action.
This above guide outlines the perfect spill response using a clear, practical 10-step spill response process designed to help businesses manage spills in the workplace safely, confidently, and compliantly.
Poor spill management can lead to:
A structured spill response plan ensures your team knows exactly what to do when a spill occurs, reducing risk and improving response time, and helps you towards your ISO14001 accreditation, by to showing your ongoing plans to improve environmental performance, ensure legal compliance, and reduce waste.
The first step in managing spills in the workplace is to stop and assess the situation.
Check for injuries and determine whether it is safe to proceed. Always refer to your company’s spill management or spill response plan before taking action. A calm, controlled assessment is the foundation of an effective spill response.
Identify the substance that has been spilled and assess the level of risk.
Different liquids, such as oils, fuels, chemicals, or unknown substances, require different spill response methods. Correct identification ensures the right absorbents, PPE, and containment equipment are used.
If the risk of responding is too great, do not attempt to manage the spill alone.
Keep people away from the area and seek assistance from trained spill responders or emergency services. Effective spill management always prioritises safety over speed.
Before continuing, ensure you and any co-responders are wearing the correct personal protective equipment (PPE).
This may include gloves, goggles, masks, or protective clothing depending on the substance involved. PPE is essential for safe spill response and exposure prevention.
If it is safe to do so, shut off the source of the spill at its origin.
If this isn’t possible, close to the source instead to limit further release. Stopping the spill quickly is one of the most effective ways to reduce clean-up time and environmental impact.
Containing the spill is a critical stage in workplace spill management.
Use spill booms, absorbent socks, or other containment products to prevent spread.
For outdoor spills, protect drains and watercourses using drain covers or temporary seals.
Once the spill is fully contained, proceed with clean-up if it is safe to do so.
Use suitable absorbents from your spill kit to recover the liquid efficiently. Always work methodically and avoid spreading contamination.
All contaminated absorbents and materials must be bagged, labelled, and disposed of in line with local waste regulations.
Where required, decontaminate the affected area and any equipment used during the spill response.
After the incident, replenish all spill kits and absorbent stocks that were used.
Being prepared is essential to effective spill management. Restocking ensures your site is ready for the next incident. Ecospill also offer Inventory Managed Serviced, Spill and Wipe Stations to help ongoing sites with their replenishment. Click here to find out if IMS could help you?
The final step in the perfect spill response is to complete an after-spill report.
Review what happened, assess team performance, and make recommendations to improve spill management procedures, training, or equipment. Implement changes to reduce the risk of future spills.
Knowing how to manage a workplace spill is essential for protecting employees, the environment, and your business. By following these 10 steps, organisations can achieve a safe, compliant, and effective spill response every time.
A strong spill management strategy combines:
If you don’t have a spill response plan in place, or want to ensure your current plan is up to date, speak to your Ecospill distributor. Site surveys can be carried out jointly with an Ecospill representative to help assess your organisation’s risks and identify the most suitable spill management products and solutions.
On 1st February 2026, Sam marked an incredible milestone – 10 years at Ecospill. Over the past decade, he’s been part of the business through periods of growth, change, and development, both professionally and personally. From joining as an Internal Business Development Manager to now representing Ecospill face to face as one of our Regional Business Development Managers.
We caught up over a cuppa, where Sam shared some of his favourite moments and what he’s most proud of achieving over the last 10 years.
What has been your favourite moment so far?
Watching the growth of Ecospill has been my favourite part of the journey. Being able to see the business develop, expand its offering, and strengthen relationships with customers over time has been extremely rewarding. Knowing that I’ve played a part in that growth makes it even more meaningful.
What’s one thing you’ve learned during your time here?
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that patience is key. Building long-term success doesn’t happen overnight, and strong relationships take time to develop. I’ve also learned that people buy from people they trust, respect, and genuinely like.
What are you most proud of achieving?
I’m most proud of being able to watch Ecospill grow during a period of significant change in my own life. Over the same time, I’ve become a dad and continued to develop alongside the company. It feels as though my personal growth and Ecospill’s growth have gone hand in hand.
What was your role in the beginning, and where are you at right now? Can you compare then and now?
I originally joined Ecospill as an Internal Business Development Manager. Over time, I’ve taken on a variety of roles within the business, gaining a strong understanding of both internal operations and customer needs. I’ve since transitioned into an external facing role as a Regional Business Development Manager, where I now spend time meeting customers face to face, supporting them with Site Surveys, Training and helping them support their customers.

Over this time, he has developed an in-depth understanding of the brands, values, and markets that define the group.
Matt brings with him a creative-first approach underpinned by strong strategic foundations. Matt’s decision to join Ecospill reflects a shared belief in the long-term vision of the group and a collective commitment to building brands that are clear, credible, and impactful. The internal marketing team is strengthened with the addition of Olivia Sanderson, who has been working within Ecospill for 4 years. Olivia has a great understanding of how the business works and her product knowledge will be invaluable in helping the group’s business communicate their message.

Enter Billy Askew.
On Sunday, 31st March, 17-year-old Billy stormed to his first ever British Championship MX2 Pro Race win at the fearsome Hawkstone Park circuit. Representing the Dirt Store Triumph Racing Team and riding the all-new Triumph 250X, Billy made motocross history, securing the first British Championship race win for Triumph’s fresh 250cc machine and proving himself as one of the UK’s most exciting young riders.
And this is only the beginning.
Billy now turns his attention to the European stage, where he’ll line up at the MXGP of Trentino in Italy this Sunday (13th April), competing in Round 3 of the European MX2 Championship. With momentum on his side and confidence in the tank, he’s ready to take on the continent’s best and continue writing his story.
Sponsorship, to us, isn’t about slapping a logo on a kit and calling it a day. It’s about backing people – real, passionate, committed people – who share our values.
Billy embodies that drive. He puts in the work, stays grounded, and performs when it matters. Just like our teams out in the field – keeping workplaces safe, spills under control, and sustainability at the forefront. Thats why we’ve been sponsoring Billy for a number of years.
And let’s face it – he’s fast, fearless, and not afraid to get his hands (and visor) dirty!. We can get behind that.
Dive deeper into Billy’s Hawkstone victory via DirtHub’s race report.
We’ll be following Billy’s progress this weekend and cheering him on from back in the UK, wishing he were out in Italy with him. No matter the result, we’re proud to be part of his journey.
Because when people push boundaries and do things the right way, that’s when real progress happens. Whether it’s on the track, in the ring or in the workplace, we move forward together.
Good luck in Trentino, Billy & the team. We’re right behind you.
