The importance of having a spill response plan in place is imperative for any business, not only can the financial costs be extremely high it can damage your company’s reputation long-term.

Management must ensure clear guidance is given to all workers about proper spill response, clean-up, and disposal of spilled material. Having the appropriate level of spill management equipment in place, along with a thorough spill management plan helps to minimise the potential dangers posed by a spill.

When a spill occurs the first step is to stop and assess the situation, identifying the substance and the level of harm it may cause. If you feel the risk of responding is too great, section of the contaminated area to keep people away from it, and seek help immediately.

If you’re confident that the spill can be contained select the appropriate level of PPE for the situation and attempt to shut off the source if it is safe to do so. Containing the spread is the first line of defence, again only if it safe to do so, using booms, socks or other suitable containment equipment. If the spill has occurred outdoors ensure the spill stays in one area and temporarily seal any nearby drain inlets.

Once the spill has been controlled, evaluate and then proceed to the clean-up phase, using absorbents provided such as pads and pillows. Bag, label and dispose of the soiled absorbents and equipment in line with local waste regulations. Decontaminate the affected area and any apparatus used in the clean-up operation if necessary.

Finally, replenish all spill kits and stocks of absorbent materials used. An after-spill report should be made along with an assessment of the team’s performance. Make recommendations for improvements and implement them.
