Ecospill-sponsored boxing twins to turn pro

Regular readers of our blog will know that Ecospill is the proud sponsor of talented Olympic boxing twins Pat and Luke McCormack. We’re now happy to report that, after sponsoring the lads for several years, they have decided to go professional.

It’s a proud moment for us here at Ecospill as our Directors Mark Sanderson and Mark Hutchinson also share a personal connection with the pugilistic brothers, who represented GB at last year’s Tokyo Olympics.

Laying the groundwork
Hailing from the North East, the 26-year-olds learned their trade at the Birtley amateur boxing gym (ABC) and have enjoyed successful amateur careers so far. In 2017, Luke won a silver medal at the European Championships, followed by gold medal success in the light-welterweight category at the 2018 EU Championships, held in Valladolid, Spain.

Pat is also no stranger to victory, claiming welterweight gold (also in Valladolid) and in Minsk at the 2019 European Games. Luke and Pat earned the right to represent GB on the international stage when they qualified for the Tokyo Olympics, and the brothers did us all proud in Japan. Pat made it all the way to the final of the welterweight division, losing out to Roniel Iglesias to claim silver.

Meanwhile, Luke lost out to eventual lightweight gold medallist Andy Cruz. There was no shame in losing to the skilful Cruz, who Luke said was: “probably one of the best kids I’ve been in with.”

Aiming high
Building on this experience, Luke and Pat are now hunting for professional glory as world champions. Talking to Sky Sports , Pat said that: “I’m looking forward to what the future brings. I’ve waited a long time to turn professional [and] I feel like my apprenticeship is done. It will take a few years to build into, but if you’re not aiming for a world title then there’s no pointing being in the game.”

We couldn’t agree more with Pat, and we’re as excited as the brothers are to see where their careers take them as professionals.
