Celebrating 15 Years with Jane North

This May, Jane marked an incredible milestone: 15 years at Ecospill. Over the past decade and a half, she has played a major role in the growth of the business, as well as being one of its very first employees! From joining as a Sales Administrator to now managing the accounts across the full group of companies.

We caught up over a coffee, where Jane shared some of her personal favourite moments and what has made her most proud over the last 15 years.

What has been your favourite moment so far?

Being involved in the growth of Ecospill from the very beginning and seeing how it has grown, changed and developed over the years. Also, moving into our new larger Accounts Office last year is one of my personal favourites, showcasing how the business has grown and the important role a strong accounts team plays within the business.

What’s one thing you’ve learned during your time here?

Every day is a school day. I learn something new every day in the accounts department. There’s always a challenge or situation that makes you think outside the box. It keeps us on our toes.

What are you most proud of achieving?

Building up the accounts team and developing all the procedures and systems over the years.

What was your role in the beginning, and where are you at right now? Can you compare then and now?

I joined Ecospill as one of the first employees when the business began trading, joining as a Sales Administrator in May 2011. I was promoted to manage the accounts for Ecospill when we relocated to Hellaby, Rotherham, in May 2012. Seven years later, we outgrew those premises and moved to our current larger site here in Aldwarke, Rotherham. As the company’s portfolio of businesses has increased, and all the businesses have grown, I’ve established an accounts team to support those growing needs. I’m now Group Head of Finance for the full group of companies.

When I think back to starting in 2011, I knew the Marks had big aspirations, and it’s been a pleasure to play my part in that journey. What an achievement for the Directors and for all the staff involved over the years.

I still smile when I think about our humble beginnings and where we are today. Even after 15 years, I’m still looking forward to the next chapter here at Ecospill and the exciting developments we have planned for the future.

What is Best for My Business, Spill Kits or Spill Stations?

If your business handles oils, chemicals, fuels, or liquids of any kind, spill control is not optional. It is a critical part of your health, safety, and environmental responsibilities.

A common question we hear is:

What is best for my business, spill kits or spill stations?

The answer is not always one or the other. It depends on your environment, risk level, and how your operations function day to day.

In this blog, we break down the differences, use cases, and how to choose the right solution for your site.

Spill Kits vs Spill Stations, What is the Difference?

What is a Spill Kit?

A spill kit is a portable spill response solution designed to be used immediately at the point of a spill.

Which is Best for Your Business?

The Short Answer

How You Can Turn Spill Opportunities into Value with One Simple Email

In many workplaces, spill management opportunities appear every day but they are often missed on risk assessments or site visits. These opportunities can appear when:

A new site opens.
A warehouse expands.
An audit identifies compliance gaps.
Or a spill incident highlights weaknesses in existing procedures.

For distributors and safety professionals, these moments represent an opportunity to add real value to customers. The challenge is often time, resources and expertise.

That is exactly why Ecospill created the Inventory Managed Services (IMS)activation process, designed to make it simple for distributors to involve Ecospill’s spill specialists and help their customers improve their spill preparedness and compliance.

Ecospill supports our trusted distributors and organisations with practical solutions including managed wipe and absorbent stations, professional site surveys and spill response training.

Step 1 – Spot the Opportunity

Some common triggers include:

These situations often highlight areas where spill control measures could be improved and old and existing methods can be challenged.

Step 2 – Send One Email

Once an opportunity is identified, getting support from Ecospill is simple.

Just send the key site details to:

sales@ecospill.org.uk

There is no need to check regional coverage or identify which Business Development Manager is responsible for the site.

The Ecospill team will take it from there.

Step 3 – Ecospill Conducts the Survey

Our specialists will carry out a professional spill site survey and provide practical recommendations tailored to the customer’s environment.

Following the survey, Ecospill prepares a ready-to-issue proposal that the distributor can present directly to the customer.

This ensures the solution is both technically appropriate and commercially clear.

Many customers also benefit from installing managed wipe and absorbent stations to ensure spill response materials are always visible and ready for use.

Absorbents & Wipers shouldn’t be hard to find when you need them most. Ecospill IMS Managed Stations keep spill response materials visible, accessible and fully replenished helping maintain cleaner, safer shopfloors.

Step 4 – Why This Approach Works

The IMS activation process benefits both distributors and their customers.

The Who, What and Why of Ecospill IMS

Turning Spill Consumables into a Managed Safety System

Spill response should never rely on chance. It should not depend on someone remembering to reorder absorbents. It should not mean discovering an empty spill station when you need it most.

That is why Ecospill Ltd developed Inventory Managed Services, IMS.

We’ve gone thought the Who, What and Why of IMS to help explain how it works and how it can benefit facilities as a life-cycle service.

Who Is IMS For?

Site and Facilities Managers: Ensure absorbent and wipe stations are always stocked, correctly positioned and ready, without managing stock internally. Making it easier for facilities to keep compliant and safe.

Health, Safety and Compliance Teams: Strengthen environmental compliance, reduce spill related incidents and demonstrate proactive risk management aligned with ISO 14001.

Operations and Maintenance Teams: Minimise downtime caused by leaks and incidental spills with immediate access to the correct absorbents.

If a business handles liquids on site including oils, fuels, chemicals, coolants or solvents, IMS provides a structured, compliant and pro-active spill management plan.

Why Managed Absorbent and Wipe Stations Matter

Spill response is not simply about having absorbents and/or wipes on site.

It is about having: The right absorbents or wipe in the right place at the right time, properly maintained and monitored.

Managed stations help:

  • Reduce downtime caused by spills
  • Protect staff and visitors
  • Minimise environmental impact
  • Support ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 compliance
  • Demonstrate proactive environmental management

Under Ecospill’s Environmental Policy and Corporate and Social Responsibility commitments, preventing pollution is embedded into operational practice. At Ecospill, we protect and care for the environment, industry and its people. And our Inventory Managed Service is a practical implementation of that commitment.

The Perfect Spill Response: How to Manage Workplace Spills Safely & Effectively

Any company with the potential for a spill should have trained staff in place and the correct products available to contain or absorb spilled liquids. The emergency plan should be simple and straightforward, flexible, and designed to achieve the necessary compliance with legislative requirements.

The spill plan should include prevention measures and clear guidance on how to contain, clean up, and dispose of spilled material. This will also include having the necessary spill management products positioned around the site(s), which will consist of, but not be limited to, spill kits and absorbent granules.

Workers tasked with cleaning a spill should also understand how to decontaminate affected surfaces. Using a spill response plan ensures that any spill is fully absorbed and contained, minimising danger, reducing the risk of heavy fines, and ensuring your company operates within legal requirements.

Please find below Ecospill’s 10 steps to perfect spill response.

The Perfect Spill Response: How to Manage Workplace Spills Safely and Effectively

Effective spill management is a critical part of health, safety, and environmental protection in any workplace. From minor leaks to major incidents, knowing how to manage a workplace spill correctly can prevent injuries, environmental damage, costly clean-ups, and regulatory action.

This above guide outlines the perfect spill response using a clear, practical 10-step spill response process designed to help businesses manage spills in the workplace safely, confidently, and compliantly.

Why Spill Management Matters in the Workplace

Poor spill management can lead to:

A structured spill response plan ensures your team knows exactly what to do when a spill occurs, reducing risk and improving response time, and helps you towards your ISO14001 accreditation, by to showing your ongoing plans to improve environmental performance, ensure legal compliance, and reduce waste.

Step 1: Stop and Assess the Situation

The first step in managing spills in the workplace is to stop and assess the situation.

Check for injuries and determine whether it is safe to proceed. Always refer to your company’s spill management or spill response plan before taking action. A calm, controlled assessment is the foundation of an effective spill response.

Step 2: Identify the Risk

Identify the substance that has been spilled and assess the level of risk.

Different liquids, such as oils, fuels, chemicals, or unknown substances, require different spill response methods. Correct identification ensures the right absorbents, PPE, and containment equipment are used.

Step 3: Seek Help if the Risk Is Too High

If the risk of responding is too great, do not attempt to manage the spill alone.

Keep people away from the area and seek assistance from trained spill responders or emergency services. Effective spill management always prioritises safety over speed.

Step 4: Use Appropriate PPE

Before continuing, ensure you and any co-responders are wearing the correct personal protective equipment (PPE).

This may include gloves, goggles, masks, or protective clothing depending on the substance involved. PPE is essential for safe spill response and exposure prevention.

Step 5: Shut Off the Source of the Spill

If it is safe to do so, shut off the source of the spill at its origin.

If this isn’t possible, close to the source instead to limit further release. Stopping the spill quickly is one of the most effective ways to reduce clean-up time and environmental impact.

Step 6: Contain the Spill

Containing the spill is a critical stage in workplace spill management.

Use spill booms, absorbent socks, or other containment products to prevent spread.
For outdoor spills, protect drains and watercourses using drain covers or temporary seals.

Step 7: Clean Up the Spill Safely

Once the spill is fully contained, proceed with clean-up if it is safe to do so.

Use suitable absorbents from your spill kit to recover the liquid efficiently. Always work methodically and avoid spreading contamination.

Step 8: Bag, Label, and Dispose Correctly

All contaminated absorbents and materials must be bagged, labelled, and disposed of in line with local waste regulations.

Where required, decontaminate the affected area and any equipment used during the spill response.

Step 9: Replenish Spill Response Equipment

After the incident, replenish all spill kits and absorbent stocks that were used.

Being prepared is essential to effective spill management. Restocking ensures your site is ready for the next incident. Ecospill also offer Inventory Managed Serviced, Spill and Wipe Stations to help ongoing sites with their replenishment. Click here to find out if IMS could help you?

Step 10: Review, Report, and Improve

The final step in the perfect spill response is to complete an after-spill report.

Review what happened, assess team performance, and make recommendations to improve spill management procedures, training, or equipment. Implement changes to reduce the risk of future spills.

Managing Spills in the Workplace: Be Prepared, Not Reactive

Knowing how to manage a workplace spill is essential for protecting employees, the environment, and your business. By following these 10 steps, organisations can achieve a safe, compliant, and effective spill response every time.

A strong spill management strategy combines:

If you don’t have a spill response plan in place, or want to ensure your current plan is up to date, speak to your Ecospill distributor. Site surveys can be carried out jointly with an Ecospill representative to help assess your organisation’s risks and identify the most suitable spill management products and solutions.

McCormack and Ecospill Go European!

Ecospill’s sponsored athlete Pat McCormack is set to take on his biggest challenge yet — and his first fight outside of the UK as a professional. The North East fighter has been confirmed to compete on the Monte Carlo Showdown card on 6th December, as part of the Riyadh Season series.

Unbeaten in eight professional bouts (all on home soil), McCormack will face Conah Walker (16-3-1), with the WBA International title potentially on the line. Whether Walker’s British crown will also be contested remains uncertain, as the fight is being held overseas.

McCormack said:

“Me and Conah are two fighters with great momentum. Many thought he beat Lewis Crocker, who is now the world champion, so I’m looking forward to using that to make a statement. And what better place to do it than Monte Carlo.”

The card will be headlined by British fighter Shabaz Masoud, who makes the first defence of his IBO Super Bantamweight World Title against Peter McGrail.

Matchroom Chairman Eddie Hearn added:

“This really is the best card we’ve ever staged in the Principality. Monte Carlo oozes class, and over the years we’ve matched that by delivering some truly memorable nights showcasing the biggest and best talent in the sport.”

As always, everyone at Ecospill will be cheering Pat on as he steps onto the European stage for the first time. Stay tuned for updates and behind-the-scenes coverage as fight night approaches!

Backing Pat McCormack in His Biggest Challenge Yet

We’re proud to stand behind Ecospill Ltd’s sponsored athlete, Pat McCormack, as he prepares for one of the biggest nights of his professional boxing career.

Pat, a Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallist, is set to headline against Mexico’s Miguel Parra on Saturday, 6th September. With an unbeaten professional record of 7-0, including 5 knockouts, Pat has proven himself as one of Britain’s most exciting prospects.

His relentless drive and commitment mirror the values we hold at Ecospill: always pushing for excellence and always striving for better.

This weekend marks a huge step in Pat’s journey towards a world title shot, and we can’t wait to see him bring his very best to the ring.
